DANCER IN THE DARK
Yesterday morning, I finished watching
Dancer in the Dark. Damn, I was crying so hard during the last few minutes of the film.
The movie gives you the feel as if you were watching your neighbor's home movies. The movements of the camera felt like you were taking on the point of view of an invisible character in the movie. You would think that it was sloppy camera work but if you watch the documentary, they had storyboards prepared (unlike in our country! bara-bara!!!) plus the crew used 100 cameras for the musical numbers. 100 cameras! That would be a big headache in editing, but they were able to do it nonetheless. Grabe! Ang galing.
The song and dance numbers were also integral to the story, as Selma (Bjork's character) seeks consolation with the music that she makes in her mind. Plus the songs were very well-written and the choreography was well-thought of.
Bjork deserved her Cannes award as her performance was very moving, you could feel her love and her fear... you could feel everything about her.
=====
This is the song she sang in the Oscars with that swan costume. (Honestly, I don't think she cared about anyone caring for what she wore to the Awards' night)
I've seen it all
Bjork
I’ve seen it all
I’ve seen the willow trees
I’ve seen my land on the first day of peace
I’ve seen a friend killed by a friend
And lives that were over before they were spent
I’ve seen what I was, I know what I’ll be
I’ve seen it all, there is no more to see
You haven’t seen elephants, kings or Peru!
I’m happy to say I had better to do.
What about China? You’ve seen the Great Wall?
All walls are great if the roof doesn’t fall.
And the man you will marry? The home you will share?
Oh no, but I really, really don’t care.
You’ve never been to the Niagara Falls?
I have seen water, it’s water, that’s all.
The Eiffel Tower, the Empire State?
My pulse was high on my very first date.
Your grandson’s hands as he plays with your hair?
Oh no, but I really, really don’t care.
I’ve seen it all
I’ve seen the dark.
I’ve seen brightness in one little spark.
I’ve seen what I chose
I’ve seen what I need
And that is enough. To want more is greed.
I’ve seen what I was, I know what I’ll be.
I’ve seen it all, there is no more to see.
You’ve seen it all and all you have seen
Is there to review on your own little screen
The light and the dark,
The big and the small
Just keep in mind, you need no more at all.
You’ve seen what you were
And you know what you’ll be
You’ve seen it all, you don’t need to see.
